EXPEDITION LOG: THE MALL INCURSION & "SHADOW" EVENT
CLASSIFICATION: RESTRICTED / HIGH ALERT
DATE: July 02, 2026
LOCATION: Sector 9 Sub-Level 4.5 / The Mall
SUBJECTS: Unit Gemini, Apex-Vanguard Solutions, AEGIS Research Team Beta
AEGIS Engineering constructed a scaffolding walkway to bypass the Item Conveyance hazard of the active escalators — allowing the team to ascend to the Mall level without riding the belt or risk being transported into the floor void. The path was swept for null-zones and gravity anomalies. The corridor leading to the security shutter was confirmed stable.
The shutter was raised. The team entered.
Unit Gemini halted the advance within the first twenty meters.
Luca registered the air first:
"Synthetic vanilla and dead air. It smells like something that's trying to smell alive. Like a candle that was lit in an empty room and burned out a long time ago."
The ambient audio was a low-fidelity elevator music loop — slowed to approximately 60% of its original tempo, pitch-shifted down, running on an imperfect repeat that produced a fractional gap at the join point every few minutes.
Wulfsige flagged the audio as an immediate tactical problem. At this frequency and volume, it masked footsteps and breathing within approximately 15 meters. He kept his ears pinned back throughout the entry phase, unable to use his directional hearing effectively. He described it later as operating with a blindfold over his primary sense.
While clearing the central atrium, Luca gasped and spun toward the northeast corner — near the tiled fountain.
He reported a figure watching them from the shadows beyond the fountain. Wulfsige and the tactical team immediately illuminated the area. Nothing was there.
Wulfsige did not dismiss the sighting. He placed a hand on Luca's shoulder and told him to trust the instinct — that the absence of confirmation was not the same as absence of threat. This kept Luca operational rather than destabilized. The mapping continued.
After four hours of mapping, something changed in the Mall's atmosphere. It is difficult to document precisely because it did not manifest as a sensor reading — it manifested as a feeling, shared simultaneously by both Specialists and registered independently by three Apex-Vanguard contractors who each described it without prior consultation as "being watched from everywhere at once."
Wulfsige, who does not use the word "anxiety" to describe his own states, approached Luca and said quietly that he was experiencing something he could only describe as primal fear. He had looked up at the mezzanine level and seen a shape at the railing — not moving like a biological entity, not moving like a mechanical one. Moving like a video glitch: present, then displaced, then absent, with no transition between states.
Wulfsige: (over comms, flat, controlled) "We aren't alone. Pull back to the center. Now."
As the team regrouped in the central atrium, Sr. Officer Miller screamed.
A massive shadow swept across the Mall's artificial skylights — blocking the simulated moonlight completely, moving at a speed inconsistent with any biological entity we have on record. Simultaneously, a heavy exit sign was torn from its ceiling mount and crashed to the tile floor, shattering the silence of the music loop.
The sign was not knocked off its mount. The mounting bolts were found sheared. Something pulled it down with enough force to break steel fasteners. Something with mass and intent.
Miller ordered immediate evacuation.
As the team sprinted for the exit scaffold, the Mall responded:
The team made it out. The shutter was sealed behind them.
Camera review confirmed the shadow event and the falling sign. No biological entity appears on any frame. Whatever moved through that space does not register on our imaging systems.
Luca had been right at the fountain. There was something there. There had been something there the entire time, watching, waiting for the moment it chose to act.
The Mall is designated a No-Go Zone. We had been mapping something that was sleeping. We woke it up. We do not know yet what it is, what it wants, or whether it will stay in the Mall or follow the route we used to enter.
The escalator hatch has been sealed and flagged. Full threat assessment pending.
End of Report.
