During the Sector 9 Elevator Incident, Luca identified the Mimic entity and alerted the team before any human member of the squad recognized the threat. His quick action prevented what would almost certainly have been at least one casualty. The tactical outcome was successful.
What Luca wanted to talk about in debrief was not the success. It was what the entity was doing — and why that was harder to carry than the fear of it.
"It wasn't fear exactly. It was just — sad. That thing used him. It knew we would try to help someone who looked hurt and scared. It knew we'd move toward him. It used our kindness against us. That's what hurts. Not the monster part. The fact that it knew us well enough to bait us that way."
This is a more sophisticated grief than we might have expected from Luca six weeks ago. He is not processing the event as a survival memory — as something that happened to him and his body. He is processing it as a moral event: something that happened to his understanding of the world. The Bacteria is a predator. The Mimic is something that studies you first.
The distinction matters to him in a way he could not yet fully articulate, but that he clearly needed the space to try.
Wulfsige spoke with Luca privately before the formal debrief. His approach was characteristic — direct, brief, and precisely calibrated to what Luca needed to hear:
"You did good, Luca. You saw it for what it was. It's okay to feel bad about it, but you saved the rest of us. That's what matters."
Luca is processing the event well. He is learning to hold empathy and operational clarity at the same time — to feel the weight of what the Complex does to people, and still function in it. That balance is difficult. He is finding it.
