"Sharing a bunk with Luca is... an exercise in patience.
I keep my side mostly clean, if not always clean. Bed made. Gear stowed. I need the order. When the world outside is changing constantly, I need to know exactly where my stuff is.
His side is a disaster zone. He calls it a 'Nest.' It's a pile of blankets, pillows, and random trinkets he finds on patrol. Yesterday I found a broken clock radio near his mattress. He said he liked the way the buttons clicked.
I started to clean it up once. I stopped. I realized that the mess makes him feel safe. It's his way of claiming space in a place that tries to erase you. So I let it be. I just make sure there's no food rotting in there, which to be fair, hasn't been an issue. He's messy, but clean."
"He thinks I'm asleep when he talks to himself, but I hear everything.
He gets cold at night. His metabolism burns so fast he can't keep heat. I heard his teeth chattering around 02:00.
I got up and checked the perimeter locks (habit). Then I took the heavy wool blanket off my bunk and draped it over his mound. He stopped shivering immediately.
He asked me about it this morning. I told him I 'run hot.' It's mostly true. My fur is really thick compared to his. That said, even I was cold last night. But if he knows I gave up my comfort for him, he'll feel guilty. He'll try to give it back.
I'd rather be a little cold than have him worry. He's got enough to worry about."
"I need to requisition a portable heater for Sector 4 (our deployment bunk). I'll tell Supply it's for 'equipment maintenance' so they don't ask questions."
